No More Silence ~ share your story

The UV4SOR No More Silence Storytelling Project

Let’s stand together and break the silence!  No More Silence is a storytelling initiative dedicated to collecting personal accounts from people impacted by the justice system as it relates to sexual offenses – including sentencing, incarceration, public registries, and the ongoing barriers of re-entry.

For too long, these experiences have been pushed into the shadows.

The No More Silence Storytelling Project is a collective effort to reclaim our voices and our humanity.  It invites affected individuals and families to tell about their lived experiences – in their own words, openly and honestly.

Sexual offense labels are wielded as a blunt instrument.  They reduce complex human beings into a single permanent identity that fuels public shaming, social exclusion, and continual punishment.

This project challenges that narrative.

Through personal stories, we affirm a deeper truth: people are more than a label.  Families are more than collateral damage.  Growth, accountability, and transformation are real, and they are happening every day.

Why Stories Matter ~ Stories humanize what policies and headlines erase.  By sharing these experiences, we aim to:

  • Expose the real impact of mandatory incarceration and public registries on individuals, families, relationships, housing, employment, and futures.
  • Challenge the myth that “time served” means justice is complete, when civil liberties, safety, and family stability remain under constant threat.
  • Show the full picture – not only pain and loss, but also resilience, responsibility, accomplishments, hope, and the commitment for a better life.  When people speak for themselves, stereotypes lose their power.

Our Goal:

These stories are more than personal lived experiences – they are valuable tools for advocacy and reform.  Together, they create a powerful collective voice that lawmakers, journalists, educators, and community leaders cannot ignore.  Each story adds weight to the truth that current policies cause real harm without improving public safetyThere is power in numbers.  There is power in truth.  And there is power in breaking the silence – together.  Beyond awareness, stories have the power to move people to care – and to act.  They invite readers, listeners, and lawmakers to step closer, to see the human impact of these policies, and to become part of the solution.  Whether that means speaking out, supporting reform, or joining advocacy efforts, storytelling can transform silence into momentum for change.

TIPS FOR TELLING YOUR STORY

✍️ Sharing your story is an act of courage.  It helps others understand the real impact of our justice system and it strengthens the call for change.  If you’re not sure where to begin, these suggestions can help you get started with telling your story.

Keep it focused.  You don’t have to share everything, sometimes the most powerful stories are the simplest and the most direct.

Use details that feel meaningful to you.  You might talk about incarceration or registration requirements, how laws have affected your family or children, barriers to housing or employment, or opportunities that were lost – or hard-won.  These details help people understand what your experience looks like in real life.

Be honest and human.  Your emotions matter.  Anger, grief, hope, regret, determination – all are valid.  Let readers see the human being behind your words

Know your core message.  Ask yourself: What do I want people to understand?  What matters the most that you would like for lawmakers or your community or your friends to hear?  One or two clear truths can stay with a reader long after they finish reading your story.

End with a Call to Action.  If you feel comfortable, invite readers to take the next step – whether that’s learning more about sentencing and registry laws, contacting their legislators, signing up for UV4SOR updates, or joining advocacy efforts.  Stories don’t just inform – they move people to act!

Your voice matters.  Your story matters.  And together, we are stronger.
